The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, says the Police Professional Standards Bureau has intensified investigations into the violent disturbance at the Kwahu Abene Palace on Monday, November 17.
The dawn incident, which occurred around 4 a.m., saw armed men—reportedly dressed in what witnesses believed were police uniforms and claiming to be National Security operatives—storm the palace of the Paramount Chief of the Kwahu Traditional Council. The group allegedly arrested the Kwahuhemaa, Nana Adwoa Gyemfua, amid gunshots heard within the palace.
The intruders also seized the official Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to the Kwahuhene. Tracking data seen by authorities indicates the vehicle is currently headed toward Accra.
The IGP’s assurance followed a visit by a delegation from the Kwahu Traditional Council, which called on him at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, November 26, to present a formal petition.
According to the IGP, statements have already been taken from individuals linked to the incident, and the police remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation to restore calm and order in the area.
Speaking on his behalf, the Head of Corporate Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, urged the chiefs to remain patient as investigations progress. “We will inform the Palace of the outcome once investigations are concluded,” she said.
Representing the Traditional Council, the Kwahu Adontenghene and Chief of Abetifi, Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, commended the IGP and the police leadership for their openness and expressed confidence in the service’s ability to ensure justice is delivered.
