The Ghana Police Service has announced the temporary closure of the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region after violent disturbances broke out following the death of a suspect in custody.
In a statement issued on Saturday, September 20, 2025, the Police explained that the suspect, whose name was not disclosed, became unconscious while in custody and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.
According to the statement, the death of the suspect triggered violent action by some youth, who attempted to set the police station on fire and vandalised parts of the facility. “As a result of these disturbances, the Kukurantumi Police Station has been temporarily closed down, and police services to the community have been relocated to nearby stations,” it noted.
The Police Service further indicated that investigations had begun into both the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death and the attempted arson attack on the station. It stressed that individuals found culpable in the disturbances would face prosecution.
Reassuring residents, the Police underscored its commitment to ensuring safety in Kukurantumi despite the temporary closure of the station. The statement said the Inspector-General of Police had directed the Eastern Regional Command to intensify patrols in the area to maintain law and order
