The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to expedite the collation and declaration of the parliamentary election results in the Ablekuma North Constituency, which remains the only seat without a declared Member of Parliament months after the 2024 general elections.
Speaking during a high-level meeting with the Election Security Taskforce and other security stakeholders at the CID Headquarters in Accra on Thursday, May 8, 2025, Dr. Yohuno expressed deep concern over the continued delay and its implications for public trust in Ghana’s electoral system.
“The situation in Ablekuma North has become a national concern,” the IGP stated. “We need a clear and immediate roadmap from the EC to guide the collation process. The police are fully prepared to provide the necessary security to ensure the process is carried out peacefully and transparently.”
According to Dr. Yohuno, the prolonged stalemate—sparked by both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) claiming victory—has heightened tensions in the constituency. He stressed the need for all stakeholders to act responsibly.
“Our responsibility is to ensure that this process is conducted with integrity, in accordance with the law, and without any form of disruption. How we handle this will influence national confidence in the electoral process moving forward,” he added.
He further appealed for cooperation among all parties involved, urging them to put the nation’s democratic health above partisan interest.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Ms. Kathleen Addy, also weighed in on the matter, appealing to residents of Ablekuma North to accept the outcome once it is officially declared by the EC.
Speaking at the same briefing, she emphasized the importance of democratic maturity in such situations.
“In every election, there are winners and losers,” she said. “Ghana’s democracy depends on our collective ability to accept electoral outcomes, even when they may not go our way. This is how we deepen democratic values.”
Ablekuma North’s results have remained in limbo due to disputes over the outcomes from three remaining polling stations. Despite multiple efforts by the EC to complete the collation process, a final declaration has yet to be made.
Both the NPP and NDC continue to maintain they have won the seat, further complicating the political atmosphere in the constituency.
