I’m not a professional Referee – Dancing Referee Somo

Ghana’s trending and sensational dancing referee, Somo has revealed that he is not a professional referee as it would be required by the laws of the Ghana Football Association.

Ghana’s trending and sensational dancing referee, Somo has revealed that he is not a professional referee as it would be required by the laws of the Ghana Football Association.

Referee Somo, born Alexander Coffie made this statement when he held a one on one interview with Nana Effah on November 1, 2021 on Republic Fm at Nkawkaw.

According to referee Somo, the name “Somo” was given him at Tema. He added that, he is not a professional referee but rather, a community referee and has not been registered as a member of the referees association.

“I’m not a professional referee with or under the GFA or the referees association. Instead, I’m a community referee. I’m yet to enroll into a referee’s course if I get the opportunity and the needed support”. He added.

Mr Somo, who is also a fire service personnel contended that, his referee career began with Ghana’s former Goal keeper, Ali Jara, who at that time organized friendly matches for him to officiate.

He also noted that, he used to be a division one  goal keeper, delivering his skills for the Kwaebibirem United in Asuom.

“It began when former Black Stars’ goal keeper Ali Jara used to allow me to officiate friendly games and that’s where I began my refereeing skills. I have officiated division one friendly games. I’m friends with Stephen Appiah, Godwin Atram and John Pantsil”.

According to referee Somo, In 2004, he was part of a milo tournament competition in Kumasi. He revealed that, he was dropped from the national team in 1997 as goal keeper for the National team.

Mr Somo reiterated that, his dancing skills was solely to keep the supporters and crowd active before, during and after the game to also drive away the tension between both teams.

In a friendly chit-chat, he said, he officiated a match in Bukom where supporters of the one of the opponent teams was angry and pelting stones at each other, so he quickly implore the DJ to drop him a song and that’s when he began dancing and the crowd turned their attention to him.

He revealed that, he is not ashamed of how he dances mainly because most people have criticized how he moves and attributed him of being a homosexual.

But Somo debunked the claims and stated that he is not ashamed of whatever he does.

The officer of the fire service disclosed that, he is the lead officer whenever there is fire at wherever he would be called to.
