Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has dismissed claims that he was threatened by the National Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Sofo Azorka, following a confrontation at the NDC office in Akwatia on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
The incident occurred when Afenyo-Markin visited the party office without prior notice, angering some executives who accused him of deliberately provoking supporters ahead of the by-election.
Some NDC members further alleged that his entourage entered the office to remove posters of their candidate.
Chief Azorka described the visit as “provocative” and “disrespectful,” accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to intimidate voters in the constituency.
Speaking in an interview on Adom TV, the Effutu MP dismissed the claims, insisting that this was not the first time such remarks had been made.
“I am informed that the NDC Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, said he wanted to ‘kill’ me. This is not the first time we have heard such threats. But I am not a coward,” he stated.
He also urged his supporters to remain steadfast. “There are foot soldiers on the ground. Nobody should allow Azorka’s words to create fear. Politics is about courage, not intimidation. Our forebearers even endured jail for the cause, so no one should give in to fear,” he added.
The clash has further heightened political tensions in Akwatia, where both the NPP and NDC are intensifying their campaigns to elect a successor for the late MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
