The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), has successfully repatriated 32 (thirty-two) West African nationals suspected of engaging in cyber fraud, specifically romance scams.

The suspects, comprising 24 Nigerians and 8 Togolese, were arrested in two separate joint intelligence-led operations organized simultaneously in Akatsi and Ho in the Volta Region by the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana Police Service and the National Security on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

Investigations according to a statement signed by Maud Anima Quainoo, Deputy Commissioner of GIS revealed that the individuals, all males, had entered Ghana through unapproved routes and were coerced by kingpins, who had initially promised them legitimate employment opportunities, to engage in cybercrime activities.

The suspects were contacted via social media applications on their phones and lured by false promises.

These persons, aged between 18 and 35 years, were treated as victims of human trafficking and have since been repatriated to their respective home countries.

Items retrieved include; 33 mobile phones, 3 power banks, 1 Toyota corolla car key, 3 type C chargers, and an airpod with one earpiece missing.

Investigations according to the statement are ongoing to apprehend the masterminds behind this operation.

As the world celebrates the Cyber Security month, the GIS warned the public, especially the youth, to be cautious of the dangers of cybercrime recruitments and human trafficking.

“We encourage citizens to be vigilant and security conscious and report suspicious activities especially houses with large concentrations of foreigners, to the nearest Immigration office to help maintain national security and prevent potential threats.

“We particularly urge landlords and property owners to exercise due diligence when renting out their houses to foreign nationals as harbouring illegal immigrants was an offence under Section 52(1)(b) of the Immigration Act, 2000, Act 573.

“The GIS remain committed to protecting Ghana’s borders and ensuring compliance with Immigration laws”.
