Mining the world over, including Ghana, has often been associated with negativity in spite of its huge contributions to the socio-economic development of the country and its citizens.
This is due to the dire consequences of the activities and operations of some of the mining companies on people and the communities in which they operate, including the destruction of agrarian lands and poisoning through the use of chemicals like cyanide and mercury.
Nayak is one such company that has had its own share of criticism and vilification over some of these acts, including the controversial issue of cyanide spillage and forest destruction.
There were times when the operations of the company nearly ground to a halt due to intermittent standoffs with some chiefs and people in its area of operations.
With time, however, Nayak Mining Company has managed to wean itself from this tag as a company whose activities and operations are impacting negatively on the community in which it operates.
Apart from pursuing a culture of zero harm to ensure the safety of its workers and communities they operate especially Kotokuom in the Atwima Mponua District of Ashanti Region, the company has also invested in infrastructural and human resource development.
Since it arrived in this community, the company has earned the trust of the chiefs and residents by implementing a variety of developmental projects as part of corporate responsibility through what has become known and accepted as social intervention.
During an interview with Silver Fm’s Akwadaa Nyame, Mr. Mike Gizo, CEO of Nayak Mining Company, highlighted several key contributions his company has made to the local community.
“Since we started our operations, we have not only created jobs for the people but also constructed essential facilities based on the community’s requests,” he stated.
Recognising the importance of clean water, the company has also installed over three portable water systems equipped with standby generators to ensure continuous water supply.
According to him, the company has completed not less than 10 infrastructural projects including classroom blocks, Information Communications Technology (ICT), Community Durbar, water facilities, road reshaping, and Ultramodern 20 seater KVIP, among others.
The community’s gratitude for these efforts is palpable. Nana Kofi Fofie, speaking on behalf of the Elders of Kotokuom within the Atwima Mponua, thanked Nayak Mining Limited for their ongoing support.
“We are truly grateful for the numerous facilities Nayak Mining Limited provides. These contributions have significantly improved our living conditions,” he said.
He asked the company for assistance in building a police station to improve security and combat criminal activity in the area.
Nayak Mining Limited’s approach to CSR sets the standard for other companies in the industry. Nayak Mining Limited exemplifies how businesses can contribute significantly to social and economic development by actively engaging with the community and addressing their needs.
Mr. Gizo reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the community, stating, “We are always ready to assist the community whenever the need arises.”
Nayak Mining Limited’s initiatives in Kotokuom highlight the positive impact that responsible mining can have on rural communities.
Their efforts not only improve local infrastructure and services, but also foster strong, collaborative relationships with the community.
This model of corporate-community partnership should serve as an example for other mining companies to emulate, demonstrating that profitability and social responsibility can coexist.
