Kwabena Agyepong is preparing to contest the NPP’s 2026 flagbearer race
A branded campaign office has emerged in Accra, signaling an imminent announcement
His bid is anchored on party reform, integrity, and a return to NPP’s founding values
A massive structure in the heart of Accra is undergoing a transformation to serve as the campaign base for Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former Senior Special Adviser to the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
The discovery intensifies speculation that Agyepong is poised to join the race for the party’s presidential flagbearership ahead of the crucial January 2026 primaries.
A visit to the site earlier this week revealed a hive of activity: workers hoisting banners, repainting in NPP’s blue and white colours, and mounting large portraits of Agyepong under slogans like “Leadership with Integrity” and “Time for Renewal.”
The full-scale branding effort signals more than just preparation — it reflects a campaign gaining real traction.
Turning Point After a Crushing Defeat
The move comes in the wake of the NPP’s historic 2024 electoral loss — its first in over a decade — which has triggered deep introspection within the party. At a recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, a resolution was passed for an early congress, now slated for January 2026. The goal: to elect a new flagbearer early, unite the party, and allow time for a rebrand ahead of the 2028 general elections.
With the timeline now fixed, the flagbearership race is heating up. Declared contenders include Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum — each critical of Dr. Bawumia’s leadership but yet to offer unified, policy-driven visions that resonate with the party’s base.
Agyepong’s Return: A Reformist Mission
In contrast, Kwabena Agyepong’s anticipated candidacy is being cast as a return to the NPP’s ideological roots. Known for his outspoken and principled leadership during his tenure as General Secretary, Agyepong is building his comeback around themes of discipline, reform, and integrity.
Close associates say preparations are nearly complete, with a formal announcement expected soon. If confirmed, this would be Agyepong’s second major bid for the flagbearer slot, after his first run in 2007.
Rooted in Tradition, Driven by Principle
Agyepong’s credentials are hard to ignore. From serving as Press Secretary to President Kufuor to being a long-standing figure in the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, his career bridges the party’s foundational past with its uncertain present. His critics call him idealistic; his supporters say he’s the moral compass the party desperately needs.
“The party needs a reset,” Agyepong warned in a 2024 interview. “We’ve drifted far from our founding ideals of sacrifice and service. Factionalism and monetization have taken over. That must change.”
His message is consistent: a call to rebuild institutions, restore public trust, and reconnect with the floating voter base that abandoned the party in 2024.
Not Just a Campaign — A Crusade
Party insiders say Agyepong isn’t just running for office — he’s vying to rescue the party’s soul.
“Kwabena is not just campaigning for power,” a senior NPP figure told GhanaWeb. “He is campaigning for the survival and moral rebirth of the party.”
As January 2026 approaches, the battle lines are forming. The question remains: Will delegates embrace reform over rhetoric, and principle over populism?
One thing is certain — Kwabena Agyepong is not just lacing his boots; he’s leading a revolution within the elephant family.
