Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has become the first to officially submit his nomination forms in the race for the party’s flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Agyepong, accompanied by a large crowd of supporters and sympathizers, arrived at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, to hand in his forms.

The party opened nominations for the flagbearer slot on July 29, 2025, with the process set to close on August 28. The NPP has scheduled January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries to elect a candidate to lead the party into the 2028 polls.

In a related development, the party has announced an expansion of its voter register for the primaries.

A circular from the NPP Headquarters, signed by Mr. William Yamoah, Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee, on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, indicated that new categories of officials and dignitaries will now be eligible to vote. The update is in line with Article 13(1)(11) of the NPP constitution and a resolution passed at the National Annual Delegates Conference on July 19, 2025.
