The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has presented three new buses to the Ghana Prisons Service to boost the transportation of inmates to courts, hospitals, and rehabilitation centres nationwide.

The vehicles—a Toyota Coaster, a Hyundai County, and an Ashok Leyland—were provided through the collaboration of the National Security Secretariat, which donated one bus, and Maripoma Company Limited, which supplied two.

During the handover ceremony, Mr Mohammed-Mubarak said the donation represented more than just improved mobility for the Service.

“These buses are instruments of efficiency, safety, and dignity,” he stated, reaffirming the government’s commitment to modernising correctional facilities and advancing rehabilitation programmes under President John Mahama’s GH₵1 billion retooling plan for the security sector.

The Interior Minister also announced a significant increase in the daily feeding allowance for inmates from GH₵1.80 to GH₵5.00, aimed at improving nutrition and overall welfare for the more than 14,000 inmates across the country.

“Although I had hoped for a higher increment, this marks a meaningful step forward after years of stagnation,” he added.

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak commended the National Security Secretariat and Maripoma Company Limited for their support and called on other institutions and private organisations to assist in upgrading prison infrastructure and rehabilitation programmes.

The Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (Esq.), expressed appreciation for the donation, describing it as “an investment in human dignity.” She noted that the gesture would strengthen the Service’s rehabilitation and reintegration initiatives.

“Hon. Muntaka has proven to be a strong advocate for the Ghana Prisons Service, giving us the confidence and stability to continue our work,” she said.
