The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has officially inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Board of the National Identification Authority (NIA), signaling a renewed drive to strengthen the country’s identity management systems.
The 10-member board is chaired by Mr. Moses Afetsi Positive, with membership comprising Dr. Gifty Seiwaa Nyarkoo, Mr. Eric Coffie, Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, Mr. Kwasi Afreh Biney, Mr. Philip Peter Andoh, Mr. Samuel Adom-Botchway, Dr. Senanu Kwasi Djokoto, Mrs. Rosemary Parker, and Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu.
At the inauguration ceremony held in Accra, Hon. Mubarak emphasized that the reconstitution of the board, along with the recent appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer, forms part of broader reforms aimed at bolstering the NIA’s operations and enhancing service delivery.
He commended the members for their wealth of experience and lauded President John Dramani Mahama for his confidence in their capabilities. The Minister also highlighted key milestones achieved under the Authority’s current leadership.
“These include the successful distribution of Ghana Cards across all 266 District Registration Offices, the elimination of processing backlogs, and the restoration of uninterrupted registration services,” he stated.
To improve public access and convenience, the Minister revealed that the premium registration centre has been relocated to the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council.
Additionally, he announced the launch of an online registration and appointment booking system in the Greater Accra Region, with plans to roll it out nationwide, starting with the Ashanti Region.
He further disclosed the establishment of five new premium registration centres through public-private partnerships and ongoing infrastructure upgrades at the NIA headquarters, including the installation of enhanced security systems like CCTV and alarms.
In his remarks, Board Chairman Mr. Positive expressed gratitude to the President for the appointment and affirmed the board’s commitment to advancing the NIA’s mandate.
“We are confident that the board will provide the strategic leadership and oversight needed to enhance the Authority’s institutional effectiveness,” he said.
The board was also reminded of its statutory obligations under the National Identification Authority Act, 2006 (Act 707), which mandates it to provide policy direction and ensure effective governance of the Authority.
