In commemoration of International Youth Day 2023, the National Youth Council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) demonstrated their commitment to empowering young girls by donating sanitary pads to students at Kormantse Methodist Basic School and Kormantse M/A Basic School, both situated in the Central Region of Ghana.
This initiative aimed to address a critical yet often overlooked need for young girls.
The generous donation, which benefited over 300 girls, was a heartening gesture that highlighted the organization’s dedication to supporting the educational needs and overall well-being of young women in the region. The donation was particularly impactful, given the challenges that many girls in low-income areas face when it comes to accessing menstrual hygiene products.
Chairperson for the National Youth Council of TUC, Mr. Dennis Atuwo, remarked that: “International Youth Day is a day that celebrates the invaluable role of youth in shaping a sustainable world. The theme for this year’s International Youth Day is “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World.” It reminds us of the crucial need to equip young people with the skills and knowledge necessary to create a greener and more sustainable future.”
He continued that, “addressing the menstrual hygiene needs of young girls is an essential step towards ensuring their overall well-being and equal access to education. The initiative aims not only to provide a practical solution but also to raise awareness about menstrual challenges that young girls face, especially in underserved communities.”
“The act of donating sanitary pads is just one example of how young people can contribute to building a more sustainable world. Whether it’s through acquiring green skills, adopting eco-friendly practices, or championing environmental conservation, youth have the power to transform our planet for the better”, he added.
The Headteachers of both schools, Madam Augustina Aboagye of Kormantse Methodist Basic School and Mr. Frederick Ainguah of Kormantse M/A Basic School expressed their gratitude for the thoughtful gesture. They both emphasized the significance of such donations in ensuring that girls could comfortably manage their menstrual hygiene, which directly impacts their attendance and participation in school.
Madam Aboagye stated, “We are immensely grateful to the National Youth Council of TUC for this timely and important donation. Menstrual hygiene management is a critical aspect of girls’ education, and this gesture will go a long way in promoting their overall well-being and academic progress.”
Mr. Ainguah echoed her sentiments, adding, “We encourage other organizations to follow this example and support initiatives that directly benefit the educational journey of young girls. It is through such collaborative efforts that we can create an enabling environment for every child to thrive.”
Ama Koomson, a student at one of the schools, shared, “This donation will make a significant difference in our lives. It shows that people care about our needs and understand the challenges we face as young girls.”
