The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has lashed out at the Ghana Police Service for going after the Youth Organizer of Suame Constituency.
The Ghana Police Service announced on Tuesday, February 6, 2023, that they have begun a search to apprehend the young activist who was seen in a widely shared social media video inciting NDC supporters against NPP supporters in the lead-up to the general elections in 2024.
In a statement signed by the National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC has labelled the decision by the Police as ‘hypocritical’, claiming that the Police did not take any action against the NPP in the violence that ensued at Ayawaso West Wuogon Bye-election in 2020, which claimed eight lives.
“It is an indisputable fact that state-sponsored violence and thuggery has been the modus operandi of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government. The Akuffo-Addo/Bawumia government have benefitted and continues to profit from violence as we witnessed in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Bye-election, 2020 Voter Registration Exercise and 2020 General Election during which eight (8) innocent Ghanaians were murdered by state-sponsored bandits belonging to the ruling NPP.”
“It is hypocritical that the Ghana Police Service which failed to even comment on or take action against the NPP bandits who perpetrated these heinous crimes against innocent Ghanaians, most of whom are NDC members, will turn around to swiftly call for the arrest of a young man for misspeaking,” part of the statement alleged.
The party also asked the Police to stop harassing the youth leader and forgive him as the message he wanted to send across did not come out as intended.
“Whilst we do not subscribe to violence as a party, except in the cases of self-defence, we cannot overlook the genuine sentiment and frustration of the people who feel helpless in the face of incessant and unprovoked attacks and killings under this Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government. In the circumstances, we reiterate that the young man misspoke and must be pardoned.”
“The Ghana Police must stop harassing this innocent activist, who clearly spoke out of pain he and other NDC supporters have suffered in the hands of NPP thugs in the Ashanti Region over the years, and focus on arresting NPP bandits and terrorists who have a Court of competent jurisdiction in Kumasi and have actually maimed and killed innocent Ghanaians.” statement said.
