Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West constituency and Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has clarified that she has not lobbied to be chosen as running mate for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia.

This follows rumours that she was among the contenders to be selected as Dr. Bawumia’s partner.

With the NPP flagbearer set to announce his running mate, many names have surfaced in the media many times, including Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Joseph Osei Owusu, and renowned clergyman and former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Prof. Opoku Onyinah, as well as Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare and Ursula Owusu-Ekulful.

However, the minister has put an end to these rumours by declaring that she has never disclosed her desire to be the running mate.

“People may speculate but I haven’t told anybody that I am interested in any position. If the flagbearer thinks in his wisdom that I can assist in this position, why not but I’m certainly not putting myself out there, she said in an interview with Citi Breakfast Show.

Meanwhile, she has advised party people to desist from putting pressure on Dr. Bawumia, urging that he be allowed to appoint who he deems fit for the position.

“I am absolutely against any active seeking of any such position. It’s an appointed position and I think the flagbearer should be left and given the space to decide who he thinks can best partner him in both the elections and in governance.

“I think it is very disrespectful for people to be lobbying as if he can’t make decisions for himself,” she added.
