Professor Emeritus Stephen Adei has sparked controversy with his comments on Bullet TV, claiming that President John Mahama has effectively legalized galamsey through the establishment of GoldBod.
During the discussion, Adei argued that politicians, chiefs, and security agents are largely responsible for polluting Ghana’s water bodies.
He added that the government has a way of making such practices appear legitimate.
According to Adei, by creating mechanisms like GoldBod to buy gold from small-scale miners, the administration has indirectly legalized illegal mining activities.
He stressed that if authorities could distinguish between genuine small-scale miners and exploitative operations, much of the environmental damage could have been prevented.
