Simon Opoku Afriyie, a Kumasi-based journalist, has helped scores of pupils in Manso Muawano in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region.
Mr. Opoku Afriyie, a news reporter at Otec FM, presented exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers, and sharpeners to hundreds of pupils in the community.
According to the philanthropist, the gift was intended to encourage young children to study hard while simultaneously supporting their parents and guardians, who were cash-strapped and desperately needed assistance.
The ace broadcast journalist has, for the past three years, also assisted the aged widows and widowers in the Muawano in various forms, organising free health screenings for hundreds of residents in the community and nearby surroundings.
Mr. Opoku Afriyie, in an interview with the media, said his desire was to see his native Manso Muawano one day produce brilliant students who would grow up to develop the area and impact many others.
He also appealed to the government, Member of Parliament (MP) of the area, Yaw Frimpong Addo, and DCE of the district, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, to come to the aid of the Muawano community to build classroom blocks since the pupils walk long distances to nearby communities to get access to education, which is hampering learning in the community.
He said getting the classroom blocks will help promote teaching and learning in the area.
He again made a passionate appeal to the government to construct mechanised boreholes in the community to solve the water crisis in the area.
According to him, the community has only one functioning borehole, which is a problem for the residents of the community.
“School children always get to school late due to the long que for water,” he lamented.
He promised to make more donations to his community whenever he got the power to do so.
Some of the beneficiaries’ thanked Mr. Simon Opoku Afriyie for the gesture.
Some parents who spoke to the media said the items had brought them massive relief.
They also appealed to natives of Muawano who have travelled abroad to emulate the kind benevolence of Mr. Opoku Afriyie.
