The Kaneshie District Court has acquitted and discharged 62-year-old commercial driver Richard Agbenyamu, whose vehicle was involved in an accident that resulted in the death of motorbike rider Abdul Rahman, 52.

Agbenyamu was initially charged with careless and inconsiderate driving, as well as negligently causing harm, but the court ruled that the charges were unsupported by the facts and declined to accept a plea from the accused.

Accident Details

According to Police Chief Inspector Apewa Achana, the incident occurred on January 22, 2025, at about 9:30 a.m. Rahman was riding a Suzuki motorbike with registration number M-22-GE 976 from Abossey Okai Junction towards Agbogbloshie.

Upon reaching the Old Fadama Onion Market, Rahman collided with the rear of Agbenyamu’s Hyundai Universe bus, with registration number GT 5272-19.

Rahman sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the Accident and Emergency Ward of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Tragically, he died later that day. His body was subsequently deposited at the hospital morgue, pending an autopsy.

Court Ruling

After investigations, Agbenyamu was charged and brought before the Kaneshie District Court. However, the court dismissed the charge of negligently causing harm, stating that Agbenyamu did not directly cause the injuries or death of the deceased.

The court concluded that the evidence showed it was Rahman who was negligent, as he collided with the rear of Agbenyamu’s vehicle.

Based on this determination, Agbenyamu was acquitted and discharged.
