Tensions are brewing at the Kantamanto Market as a group of secondhand clothing sellers calls for the immediate resignation of their union leaders, accusing them of making secretive decisions that could jeopardize their livelihoods.
At a press briefing, spokesperson for the concerned traders, Nana Kofi Addo, expressed frustration over the actions of the leadership of 13 unions operating within the market.
He claimed that despite representing different business groups, the leaders frequently take major decisions without consulting their members.
The latest controversy stems from a recent fire disaster that left parts of the market in ruins. According to the traders, the union leaders engaged a foundation that promised support for rebuilding efforts. However, the concerned traders believe that the foundation has ulterior motives.
“Our investigations show that this foundation is not here to help us but rather to take over the market yard,” Nana Kofi Addo alleged.
He further raised suspicion over a secretive meeting held at dawn by the union leaders.
“As I speak to you, just yesterday at 1 a.m., I received intel that they were having a meeting. I made several calls to verify, and it turned out to be true. Why hold such a meeting at that hour? This only raises more questions,” he said.
The traders fear that instead of advocating for their interests, the union leaders are paving the way for their displacement.
“We do not want any foundation operating in this market. If there is going to be a rebuilding process, it must be done in full transparency with the involvement of the traders, not through secret deals,” Nana Kofi Addo insisted.
The situation has heightened anxiety among traders, many of whom now demand not only answers but also the immediate resignation of the union leaders they no longer trust.
