The Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, has reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to advancing tertiary healthcare through research, patient-centred care and clinical mentorship.
He made the remarks during the opening of the hospital’s 2025 End-of-Year Performance Review Conference held in Kumasi to assess its operational performance and outline strategies for the future.
The conference, which coincides with the hospital’s 70th anniversary, is being held under the theme: “KATH @70; Advancing Tertiary Healthcare on the Pillars of Research, Customer-Centric Care and Clinical Mentorship.”
Dr. Baidoo noted that despite challenges in 2025, including a nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association and technical disruptions to the Lightwave Health Information Management System, the hospital recorded significant gains in service delivery.
According to him, specialist outpatient cases exceeded targets by four percent, while emergency attendance and surgical procedures also surpassed projections. He added that institutional deaths reduced by 16 percent compared to 2024, although some areas, including admissions and deliveries, fell short of targets.
The CEO outlined key investments made during the year, including the procurement of medical equipment worth over GH¢10 million through internally generated funds to enhance specialist care. He also cited the restoration of critical diagnostic equipment, including CT scan machines, and the renovation of the hospital’s dialysis centre, bringing the number of such facilities to three.
On staff welfare, Dr. Baidoo disclosed that management increased responsibility allowances for line managers and cleared outstanding promotions. He added that nearly 90 percent of staff applications for further studies were approved, while GH¢4.3 million was spent on staff medical care.
He further revealed that more than 300 staff members underwent training in professional communication in collaboration with the University of Media, Arts and Communication, contributing to improved patient satisfaction, which rose from 85.5 percent in 2024 to 91.2 percent in 2025.
Dr. Baidoo also announced the approval of a new strategic plan for 2025–2029 aimed at strengthening the hospital’s position in clinical care, medical education and research. As part of this effort, the hospital has entered into a partnership with the Mayo Clinic, designating KATH as an Africa centre for its Global Health Programme.
Looking ahead, he highlighted several major projects, including the construction of a state-of-the-art cardiac centre under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, expected to significantly boost cardiac care services.
Other ongoing and planned projects include the completion of an Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre, a patients’ relatives hostel, a new oncology centre in collaboration with the Jospong Group of Companies, and a multipurpose auditorium sponsored by the Church of Pentecost.
The hospital is also working with the City Cancer Challenge and Amgen to acquire a modern mammogram machine to enhance cancer diagnosis.
Dr. Baidoo emphasized that 2026 would be a transformative year for the hospital, with renewed focus on infrastructure, research, and clinical mentorship programmes aimed at supporting other health facilities across the country.
He called for continued support from stakeholders to sustain the hospital’s role as a leading provider of specialist healthcare services in Ghana and beyond.
