The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed pre-tertiary school heads to ensure the safety of students as it continues to engage the three teacher unions to suspend their strike action.

On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) announced a nationwide strike due to what they describe as the government’s failure to address some pressing issues hindering their progress of work.

At a press conference on Wednesday, the three unions revealed that the Ministry of Education and GES failed to renegotiate a Collective Agreement which addresses issues such as allowances for teachers in under-served areas, entertainment allowance, and housing/rent allowance hence their decision to embark of the strike action.

However, in a press statement, the GES noted that all public schools should be opened despite the strike adding that, heads of Public Kindergarten and Primary Schools as well as Junior and Senior High Schools should mobilize their management teams to ensure the safety and well-being of all students in schools,

“Heads of Public Kindergarten and Primary Schools as well as Junior and Senior High Schools have been directed through the Regional and District Directors to mobilize their management teams to ensure the safety and well-being of all students in schools,” GES stated.
