The Traders Association of Kumasi city markets- Kejetia have asked its traders to disregard any information regarding the extension of the closure of the market and report to their various shops today, Monday, March 20, 2023.

This notice served by the leaders of the association is in response to a release by the Kumasi City Market Board of Directors on the reopening of the market.

The Kejetia market was closed down to traders following a fire outbreak on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, resulting in the loss of millions of cedis.

Directors of the market and the fire service had to close down the market to find out the cause of the fire and possible repair works.

According to the initial communique from the directors, traders are to report to their shops on Monday, March 20, 2023.

However, upon further meetings, the board announced it has extended the closure of the market for another week starting Monday, March 20, 2023.

The Traders Association in a joint statement have indicated that the extension of the closure would not be tolerated.

“Let no one take we traders and transport operators for granted.

It is very clear since the board has a constant source of living they don’t care what source of livelihood the traders and transport operators depend on.
Well, we wish to serve notice to the public that Kejetia will be opened for trading on Monday.

We will not accept the further one-week closure”, the association stated in a statement.

Again the association is demanding answers from the board of directors of the market to what they did with the numerous warnings from the fire service before the unfortunate fire outbreak.

The traders are of the view that the board of directors do not care about traders and transport operators in the Kejetia market hence their negligence on the warnings from the fire service.

“We are by this release calling on all traders and transport to come to work with red bans”, the statement added.
