Ken Ofori-Atta sues Captain Smart for defamation

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta is demanding an amount of GH¢10 million from Onua TV presenter Captain Smart for allegedly defaming him.

In the suit filed against the “Maakye with Captain Smart” host, the finance minister claims that some statements from the host are defamatory to his reputation.

Captain Smart during one of his shows alleged that Mr. Ofori-Atta has taken a 10% share out of the International Money Fund’s $3 billion bailout for Ghana.

Captain Smart is said to have asked “Are you aware that Ken Ofori-Atta has taken his 10% of the IMF money? [For] Every loan we take he takes 10%”.

Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta in a writ amongst other reliefs is demanding “recovery of the sum of Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GH¢10,000,000.00) as general damages including aggravated and/or exemplary damages for defamation for the libel uttered by Defendant.

An apology for and retraction of the words complained of and particularized supra”.

The finance minister is also demanding a “perpetual injunction restraining the defendant whether by himself, his servants, his agents or assigns from repeating same or other defamatory words against him.

Ken Ofori-Atta as the finance minister has played an important role in securing the $3 billion loan from IMF to boost Ghana’s economy.
