The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced an extension of the demolition date for all unauthorized temporary structures, containers, and garages situated in and around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, granting affected individuals additional time to voluntarily relocate.

In a public notice issued for immediate release, the Assembly explained that the decision follows extensive deliberations held at a meeting of the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) on Tuesday, February 4, 2026.

The meeting focused on the planned demolition exercise intended to clear illegal structures encroaching on the stadium’s surroundings.

According to the statement, the demolition initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Assembly to restore order, improve sanitation, enhance public safety, and ensure free movement within critical public spaces across the Kumasi metropolis.

Humanitarian Considerations Prompt Extension

The Assembly noted that during the REGSEC meeting, key traditional leaders, including Nana Amakomhene and Nana Dadeesoabaahene, made strong appeals for additional time to enable those affected to reorganize their livelihoods and relocate their properties peacefully.

Their interventions were duly considered, leading REGSEC to approve an extension of the demolition deadline as a humanitarian measure.

“Management wishes to stress that this extension is granted purely as a humanitarian measure to allow affected persons ample time to relocate voluntarily,” the statement emphasized.

As a result of the approval, the demolition of all unauthorized structures and containers around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium has now been rescheduled to Monday, April 6, 2026.

The Assembly has therefore urged all owners and operators of affected structures to take full advantage of the extended period to remove their properties within the stipulated timeframe.

No Further Extensions Will Be Granted

KMA further cautioned that the new deadline is final and that no additional extensions will be entertained beyond the revised date.

“The Assembly reiterates that no further extensions will be granted beyond the new date, and any structure remaining after 6th April 2026 shall be removed by the Assembly without recourse, in accordance with existing laws and regulations,” the notice warned.

Restoring Order and Aesthetic Value

The demolition exercise, according to city authorities, is part of ongoing metropolitan efforts aimed at reclaiming public spaces, reducing congestion, and improving the aesthetic value of Kumasi’s major landmarks.

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium, being one of the nation’s most important sporting facilities, attracts thousands of visitors during major events. Authorities have therefore stressed the need to maintain a safe, orderly, and hygienic environment around the stadium.

KMA has appealed to residents, traders, and operators around the stadium enclave to cooperate fully with the directive to avoid inconvenience and potential loss of property.

The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing city regulations while also balancing the needs of affected persons through dialogue and humane interventions.
