Doctors at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital have suspended all Out-Patient Department (OPD) services as of Monday, 4 May 2026.
The industrial action, spearheaded by the Korle Bu Doctors Association (KODA), stems from a persistent conflict between Laboratory Physicians and Medical Laboratory Scientists at the hospital’s Central Laboratory.
KODA claims that patient safety and clinical standards are being undermined by “unlawful” restrictions placed on the Central Laboratory by the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists.
KODA demands that all specialised laboratory results be validated by qualified Laboratory Physicians before being released.
The association is calling for unrestricted access to laboratory equipment for both clinical and academic purposes.
Management has been urged to investigate alleged threats against doctors and implement protective measures.
The association warned that the withdrawal of services could expand if the impasse remains unresolved.
“KODA withdraws all Out-Patient Services (OPD) from Monday, May 4, 2026. Escalation towards suspension of in-patient services will be communicated in due course,” the statement said.
KODA also voiced strong opposition to a proposed 24-hour specialist OPD rollout, noting that the Korle-Bu Polyclinic already provides 24-hour outpatient care.
While acknowledging the impact on the public, the association maintained that the strike is a last resort to preserve professional standards.
“We regret the inevitable inconvenience to our patients; however, this action is necessary to ensure patient safety and the long-term stability and professional standards of the hospital,” the statement added.
