Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is also the NPP’s Presidential Candidate, has unveiled a groundbreaking digital border control system and electronic gates (e-gates) at the Kotoka International Airport.

The system, designed and built by Ghanaians, integrates biometric and facial recognition technology to enhance border security and streamline the travel experience.

The innovative e-gates enable Ghanaian citizens with a Ghanacard to pass through immigration without interacting with officials, offering a faster and more efficient process. Members of the diaspora and foreign visitors can also use the e-gates after pre-registering their biometric data and travel credentials.

“This marks a monumental leap forward in border management,” said Dr. Bawumia during the launch. “Ghana is now a pioneer in integrating biometric and facial verification systems into a single platform, putting us ahead of many developed nations.”

The Vice President highlighted the global relevance of the initiative, drawing comparisons to similar systems in countries like the United Kingdom and the European Union. He explained that the e-gates are equipped with artificial intelligence and real-time data processing to ensure a secure and seamless travel experience for all.

A Boost to Border Efficiency and Security

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the benefits of the e-gates, which include expediting immigration processes for Ghanaians, creating a hassle-free entry experience for members of the diaspora, and positioning Ghana as a leader in modern travel infrastructure.

“The e-gates enhance border efficiency and security, while making Ghana a welcoming destination for global travelers,” he noted. “This technology will not only improve convenience but also promote national security and economic growth.”

Expanding the E-Gates System Nationwide

The Vice President announced plans to expand the e-gates to other airports, including Tamale and Kumasi, as well as all land and sea borders. “Our goal is to ensure that travelers nationwide benefit from this advanced technology, maintaining consistency across all points of entry,” he said.

The Ghanacard as a Cornerstone

Dr. Bawumia attributed the success of the digital border control system to Ghana’s robust biometric identification framework, anchored by the Ghanacard. Recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as a valid e-passport, the Ghanacard has become integral to Ghana’s integrated digital systems.

“This milestone builds on the foundation of the Ghanacard, which has revolutionized identity management in Ghana. It is not only a tool for efficient service delivery but also a critical asset for national security,” he said.

With the new system, Ghanaians can now travel more efficiently, while Ghana’s border management prepares for future technological advancements, solidifying the country’s position as a leader in intelligent border control.
