Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sporting Club were crowned winners of the maiden Democracy Cup after beating arch rivals Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The game served as the main attraction of the event fronted by Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to mark the 30th anniversary of democratic governance in Ghana.
A curtain raiser involving some parliamentarians and former Black Stars was played and had the select Ghana Parliament side win 3-1.
The porcupine warriors took the lead after Justice Blay converted from the spot in the first half.
Hearts of Oak fought back and got the equalizer some 5 minutes into the second half through Asamoah Boateng.
Both teams were determined to lift the trophy and secure the bragging rights once again but Kumasi Asante Kotoko came out winners after goalkeeper Kwesi Nketiah failed to stop a shot from Peter Amidu in the 62nd minute to give Kotoko the win.
