A 31-year-old woman has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.
The Kpando Circuit Court handed the sentence to Stella Amedzorme on August 3, 2026, following investigations that led to the safe rescue of the child, according to a statement signed by the Volta North Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Felix Kwao.
The incident occurred on July 17, 2026, when the baby’s mother, 21-year-old Gloria Xagbe, briefly left her son in the care of Amedzorme, a fellow market trader, while she went to purchase packaging bags.
The Police said upon her return, both Amedzorme and the child were missing, leading her to report the matter to the Police.
Acting on intelligence, officers arrested Amedzorme on July 18 at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, where the baby was found safe.
During investigations, the suspect admitted taking the child on the instructions of her fiancé, who is currently at large.
Amedzorme first appeared before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20 and was remanded into police custody. She returned to court on August 3, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
“The swift arrest of the suspect and the safe rescue of the child demonstrate our unwavering commitment to protecting lives, especially children, and ensuring perpetrators are brought to justice,” the Police said.
The Volta North Regional Police Command said efforts are ongoing to arrest Amedzorme’s fiancé to assist with investigations.
The Command also urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving children in the care of others, stressing that vigilance remains critical in preventing similar incidents.
