Kumasi: Lancaster Hotel staff threatens protest over unresolved salary restructuring

The Union of Industry, Commerce and Finance Workers (UNICOF) has served notice of its intention to embark on a symbolic protest at Lancaster Hotel in Kumasi over unresolved concerns of staff salary restructuring.

In a letter dated April 17, 2026, and addressed to management, the union expressed growing dissatisfaction among employees following a salary structure exercise conducted in collaboration with the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), which reportedly led to the downgrading of some staff.

According to the union, initial efforts to engage management on the matter were unsuccessful, as its formal communication went unanswered.

The situation was subsequently referred to the National Labour Commission, which directed management to respond in writing and engage the union to resolve the issue—an instruction the union says was not followed.

UNICOF further indicated that subsequent discussions between both parties resulted in an agreement to restore affected employees to their appropriate grades.

However, the union claims management has since failed to adhere to the agreed implementation timeline.

Citing prolonged delays and unsuccessful attempts to secure compliance, the union announced plans to begin a symbolic protest by hoisting red flags starting Monday, April 21, 2026.

The union noted that the action will continue until management demonstrates a firm commitment to implementing the agreed resolution.

UNICOF urged management to treat the matter with urgency to prevent further escalation of the dispute. Copies of the letter were also sent to relevant stakeholders, including the Trades Union Congress Secretariat and local union representatives.
