The Kumasi South Regional Hospital is urging the government to fast-track the commissioning of the Sewua Hospital to help address the acute congestion and limited resources it is currently grappling with.
This call was made during a working visit by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health to the Kumasi South and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals.
The visit forms part of efforts by Parliament to gain firsthand insight into healthcare delivery across the country by directly engaging health professionals and assessing service challenges on the ground.
In a presentation to the committee, Dr. Kwame Ofori Boadu, Medical Director of Kumasi South Hospital, underscored the critical need to expand the hospital’s infrastructure. He expressed concern over the takeover of the hospital’s frontage by traders a situation that persists despite interventions from local assemblies.
Dr. Boadu called for the immediate operationalization of the Sewua Hospital, which has been entangled in administrative delays, noting that it would significantly ease pressure on Kumasi South and improve service delivery for patients.
Responding to the hospital’s concerns, Dr. Thomas Winsum Anabah, head of the delegation and MP for Garu, assured management of the committee’s support. He promised to reflect their concerns in the committee’s report to Parliament and to advocate for the necessary interventions.
The committee’s visit is part of a four-day national tour, which began on Tuesday, April 22, and continues through Friday, April 25, 2025.
The objective is to evaluate the state of healthcare infrastructure, uncover critical challenges, and propose practical solutions to enhance healthcare delivery nationwide.
Participating in this leg of the tour, known as Team 3, are Members of Parliament tasked with visiting selected health institutions.
These include Alexander Akwasi Acquah (MP for Akim Oda), Thomas Winsum Anabah (MP for Garu), Arhin Prince Ebenezer (MP for Mfantseman), Hottordze Roosevelt Alexander (MP for Central Tongu), and Mohammed Sherrif Abdul-Khaliq (MP for Nanton). Their scheduled stops include the, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Koforidua Regional Hospital, Ho Teaching Hospital, and the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
