The Kwahu Traditional Council has issued a strong warning to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, to release the Abene Palace to nananom within three weeks.

At a press conference held at Abetifi, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, President of the Kwahu Traditional Council and Kwahuhene, said the chiefs are giving the IGP up to 14th January 2026 to release the Abene Palace, which has been occupied by the Ghana Police Service.

Nana Simpe Owiredu III, Kontihene of Kwahu Abene, who spoke on behalf of the Kwahuhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, said the palace contains gold and other properties belonging to Kwahu.

He warned that if any of these items go missing, the IGP and the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey Adjei, will be held responsible and made to pay the cost.

The Twafohene of the Kwahu Traditional Area, who also serves as the Chief of Kwahu Tafo, Nana Kwasi Opoku Minta, appealed to the government to treat the matter with urgency and release the palace to nananom within three weeks.

He warned that failure to do so would force the chiefs to advise themselves.

Nana Bonsu Ayirepe, Chief of Kwahu Pepease, added that the IGP had earlier told them he was not part of what was happening at the Abene Palace.

However, he said the chiefs now believe the IGP is behind the continued occupation and the locking up of the palace and therefore appealed for its release to nananom.
