The Social Welfare Department of the Kwahu West Municipality in the Eastern Region, has made significant efforts to distribute items to persons with disabilities (PWDs) as part of government initiatives, typically funded by a portion of the District Assembly’s Common Fund.

This process, designed to support beneficiaries’ economic empowerment, education, and health needs, saw 41 beneficiaries with smiles embracing the gesture.

The Kwahu West Municipal Assembly is committed to ensuring that persons living with disabilities (PWDs) within its boundaries, have access to the resources and support they need to thrive in life.

The assembly has purchased and disbursed items that will aid beneficiaries in engaging in income-generating activities, including fufu pounding machines, deep freezers, tilling machines, and pecuniary support for healthcare and education.

Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr. Akoto, attributed the program’s success to the release of funds by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and the MCE.

“Funds are allocated transparently and equitably, ensuring that beneficiaries receive timely and adequate support,” she expressed.

“By empowering PWDs, we aim to promote inclusion, independence, and equal opportunities,” she added.

The disbursement was done on Monday, December 22, 2025, at the Municipal Assembly’s Compound with 44 beneficiaries.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Tamimu Halidu, shared that the initiative is part of a supportive vision from President Mahama aimed at developing the lives of PWDs.

He emphasized that the government has uncapped the PWDs’ common fund, generating an increase in the number of PWDs.

“We are preparing a place for the PWDs as their workshop settlement,” the MCE hinted.

The MCE commended the stakeholders for the continuous support and commitment to uplifting persons with disability. “I wish to commend the Disability Fund Management Committee, the department of Social Welfare and Community Development, the PWD Desk Officer, the Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD), and all stakeholders who have worked tirelessly to make this programme a success”,

He added that his office will ensure and protect funds meant for the betterment of the lives of persons living with disabilities. “Let me state this clearly and without reservation, as Municipal Chief Executive, I will ensure that transparency, accountability, and fairness prevail in the management of the Disability Common Fund. Every pesewa allocated will be accounted for. Every beneficiary will be treated with dignity. This fund belongs to the PWDs, and under my watch, it will serve its true purpose”,

Disabilities goes far beyond tools and equipment. Within the same year, ten (10) PWDs benefited from caregiver support, covering feeding, mobility, medical reviews, and daily care. Three (3) beneficiaries received medical assistance, including payment of medical bills and medical lenses, while one (1) PWD received a laptop to support education and skills development.

He urged the beneficiaries to make proper use of the items given to them to improve their standard of living.

“The items you are receiving today are not for consumption; they are capital. They are seeds. When used wisely, they will grow into sustainable livelihoods and lasting independence. I urge you to use them responsibly so that tomorrow, you will not be asking for help but offering employment and support to others”,

Kwahu West Municipality, we currently have 587 updated and registered persons with Disabilities, made up of 356 males and 231 females. Since 2017, this Assembly has supported a total of 476 PWD beneficiaries, leaving only 111 yet to benefit. This is not accidental. It is the result of consistent policy direction, responsible leadership, and deliberate planning.

Within the year under review, 2025 alone, 55 PWDs have benefited, and 41 of them received working tools and empowerment items. These items were not selected at random. They were provided based on needs assessment, sustainability, and income potential. The items include:

• Sixteen (16) Deep Freezers

• Two (2) Industrial Knitting Machines

• One (1) Industrial Sewing Machine

• One (1) Hair Dryer with Basin

• Two (2) Fufu Machines

In addition, Nineteen (19) beneficiaries engaged in trading and agro-based activities have received cash and start-up support, including assistance for petty trading, baking, soft drink businesses, farming, painting works, charcoal businesses, liquid soap production, and food commodities such as maize, gari, and onions.

These interventions are not acts of charity. They are strategic investments, investments in dignity, self-reliance, income security, and economic resilience

In appreciation, the Ghana Federation of Disability (GFD), through its Local Chairman, K-Fosu, showed gratitude to the government and the MCE for their unwavering support to PWDs.

He called on his fellows to adhere to the proper use of the items and pecuniary support.

President Mahama has increased the allocation of the Disability Common Fundr From 3% to 5%. This bold and unprecedented decision reflects a government that governs with a soft heart, a government that understands that true development is not measured by infrastructure alone, but by how the most vulnerable are protected, empowered, and uplifted.
