The Kwahu West Municipal Assembly has met with traders and stakeholders to discuss the reconstruction of the Nkawkaw Central Market.
This project promises to boost commerce and transform the town’s economic landscape.
At the meeting, Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Tamimu Halidu, highlighted the market’s potential to enhance local trade and create jobs. “This market will be a game-changer for Nkawkaw, offering traders a modern space to conduct business,” he said.
The facility will feature over hundreds of stalls, modern storage, Daycare, Police and fire station and sanitation facilities, setting a new standard for markets in the region. Traders are excited about the prospect of a more organized and hygienic trading environment.
The project is part of the government’s efforts to upgrade infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in Municipal and District capitals. Nkawkaw’s improved market is expected to attract more traders and visitors, benefiting local businesses.
The project slated for completion in 8 months from the day of commencement.
“This project aims to create a bigger opportunity for farmers in the area, who bring their produce to sell, and is surrounded by over 214 dominant farming communities. We’ve agreed with the contractor to finish in 8 months. Initially, it was 12 months but looking at how important this facility is to the Assembly and people of Nkawkaw, we made adjustments to cover some of the months to fast-track completion”, Tamimu added.
The market’s development is part of the assembly’s efforts to enhance local trade and create jobs, aligning with the government’s initiative to upgrade infrastructure and stimulate economic growth in district capitals.
The Assembly has made provision for the relocation of traders and store owners. These traders will spring up across Nsuta, Trado, Railways line and Tudu markets.
The traders have been given until after Easter to vacate posts for the demolition of the old market structure to allow for the commencement of the new modern market.
The Assembly has also tabled list of traders currently occupying stores to be the first responders to be given the stores when completed.
The new market design comprises of a three-unit 3-storey building with ancillary facilities.
