The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has revealed that reconstruction of the La General Hospital is expected to begin no later than November.
In July 2020, the La General Hospital was demolished after the hospital’s administration in 2015 reported severe structural problems.
On August 10, 2020, President Akufo-Addo cut sod for the commencement of the reconstruction project, but after three years of sod cutting, the redevelopment project is yet to commence.
In a meeting with the Municipal Chief Executive for La Dade-Kotopon, Solomon Kotey Nikoi, the regional minister also mentioned that the hospital has been absorbed into the government’s Agenda 111 project.
The MCE made it known to the regional minister that residents of La have complained for a long time, hence the project needs to be completed for residents.
Responding to the delays in the commencement of the project, Henry Quartey assured the residents of his commitment to complete the project as soon as possible.
“On the issue of the La General Hospital, we have been following the matter and I know very well that a decision has been taken at Cabinet and Agenda 111 will move there soon to commence work.
As to the time, I don’t know but let’s say that latest by November, the contractor should have moved to the site”, the minister stressed.
Financed by a credit facility from Standard Chartered Bank of the United Kingdom, with an export credit guarantee from Sinosure of the People’s Republic of China, to the tune of €68 million with an insurance cover of €3,860,349.18, the hospital, when completed, will provide much more health services to the people of La and surrounding communities.
The project will be undertaken by a Chinese company, Poly Changda.
Upon completion, it will be transformed into a 160-bed facility and will be fitted with an outpatient department, inpatient wards, maternity and neonatal services, a surgical unit with four theaters, an accident and emergency department, a public health department, a pharmacy unit, a laboratory, administration, an imaging area with a CT scan, an X-ray room, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, mammography units, a physiotherapy unit, and a mortuary.
