The Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana has called on the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) to, as a matter of urgency, introduce modern technologies and techniques to improve agriculture in the country.
According to the group, Ghana has long been recognized as an agricultural nation with tremendous potential but the sector faces several challenges that have hindered its growth and productivity.
In a press statement, the farmers pointed out some challenges facing the Agricultural sector and possible solutions to remedy the situation for the sector to get back on its feet as it is one of the major sectors contributing to the growth of the economy.
The group noted that one of the primary factors contributing to the poor agricultural performance is the lack of modern farming techniques and technologies adding that outmoded farming practices, limited access to irrigation, and inadequate use of fertilizers impact yields and overall productivity.
Citing other challenges such as the unpredictable weather patterns, low level of mechanization, poor road network, and lack of storage facilities, the farmers said all these factors are contributing to the low level of production and also discourage the participation of the youth in Agriculture.
“To address these issues, it is crucial to prioritize and invest in the modernization of Ghana’s agricultural sector”, the group noted.
Suggesting some possible solutions, the farmers indicated that, it is important to promote modern farming techniques and technologies such as enhanced irrigation systems, and the use of quality fertilizers can significantly improve crop yields and farmer income.
“Access to finance and credit facilities should be easily accessed by farmers to enable them to invest in modern farming equipment, machinery, and quality inputs.
This will empower them to adopt improved agricultural practices and enhance productivity”.
However, the government as part of its plans to boost the Agricultural sector has put in place measures under its Agricultural programme, Planting for Food and Jobs to provide the needed support in terms of finances and modern equipment and infrastructure.
The measures include providing farmers with fertilizers, and incentives and making the sector more attractive for the youth to engage in agriculture.
