Laryea Kingston has immediately resigned from his role as the head coach of Ghana’s U-17 men’s national team, the Black Starlets.
This comes after Ghana on Saturday, failed to qualify for the 2025 edition of the U-17 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) following their defeat to Burkina Faso at the University of Ghana Stadium.
The former Black Stars player had only been in charge of the team since October 2023, having led the team to 12 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats in 17 games.
Speaking after the game, he disclosed that he had made the decision to step down as the head coach even before the start of the tournament.
”I know Ghanaians know me as a player and are familiar with the sacrifices I made for the country during my playing days. I gave my all as a player, but in the end, I wasn’t happy. I put more focus on my coaching career and educated myself to make sure I came back to change the narrative around Ghana Football.
”Within these past seven months as Head Coach, I’ve given my all. I decided when we came back from Russia that I would resign after the WAFU competition. The explanation will come later,” he stated.
Ghana has in the last three editions of the AFCON failed to make an appearance.
