According to a report by Asaase 99.5 Radio on Monday October 13, 2025, Professor Ameyaw Akumfi’s legal counsel has formally withdrawn from representing him in the ongoing Sky Train case. The unexpected decision has drawn attention within political circles and raised new questions about the progress of the case.

Professor Ameyaw Akumfi, a senior member of the NPP and former Minister of Education, has been linked to the Sky Train project, one of Ghana’s most ambitious urban transport plans. The project was introduced to modernize transportation in major cities, especially Accra. However, it has faced challenges including financial constraints, procurement concerns, and public scrutiny over its implementation.

The withdrawal of Professor Akumfi’s lawyer adds a new twist to the matter. Although the reason for the withdrawal has not been officially stated, legal experts believe it could have implications for the defense process and possibly delay court proceedings. They note that such a change in legal representation often requires time for new counsel to review documents and prepare adequately.

Sources close to Professor Akumfi have revealed that efforts are already underway to appoint a new lawyer to continue the case. Supporters of the former minister have expressed confidence that he will resolve the matter successfully and clear his name.

The Sky Train project remains one of the most discussed infrastructure initiatives in recent years. It was expected to reduce traffic congestion and boost urban development, but controversies surrounding its funding and execution have led to several legal and political challenges.

This latest development adds to the growing concerns within the NPP, as the party continues to deal with issues linked to past government projects.
