Former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, has disclosed that he was told the NPP would lose the 2024 general elections if they did not remove the current Inspector General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, from his position.
According to him, a police officer named COP Asare came to his office in Osu to inform him that the IGP, George Akuffo Dampare, is not on the NPP’s side and would cause them to lose the 2024 elections.
The former NPP Northern Regional Chairman made this pronouncement during his appearance before the parliamentary committee set up to investigate a tape in which some persons had planned to remove the IGP from office.
“He said he wanted to come and see me, so I could talk to the president and that what was going on was not the best. He said their IGP, is not with the government or the party so if he is still at post till the 2024 elections, then the NPP cannot break the 8 because he is an NDC,” he told the committee.
“He even told me that this Assin North election, if we allow the IGP to go there, we will lose the elections and that scared me.
He also explained that COP Asare said he came to see him [Bugri Naabu] because his intention was for him to convince the president to remove the IGP after several attempts to get the president to take that decision failed.
“COP Asare told me the message had already got to the president, but he is not interested in changing the IGP. He said they had even sent so many people to him, but it failed and at the end of the day, someone recommended that he comes to see me because the president would listen to me,” he said.
Background:
The leaked tape, which surfaced on July 11, allegedly involved a prominent police commissioner and some leaders of the governing New Patriotic Party plotting to remove the IGP.
According to the recording, the plotters perceive Dampare as a potential obstacle to the party’s success in the 2024 elections.
However, Bugri Naabu, has admitted that the conversation actually happened between himself and some other three top-ranking Police Officers.
