The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Daniel Ireland, a 25-year-old Liberian graphic designer, to 10 years in prison with hard labor for robbing a Bolt driver of his vehicle.
Ireland, along with his 18-year-old fiancée, Skylah Leeann Marine Travis, an American national, admitted to conspiring to rob the driver and were convicted based on their pleas.
While Ireland’s sentence was immediate, the court deferred sentencing for Travis pending the outcome of a pregnancy test.
She is scheduled to appear in court again on January 20, 2025.
Additionally, the court, presided over by Mrs. Susanna Eduful, ordered both convicts to pay GHC6,000.00 each to the victim as compensation by January 31, 2025. The stolen Toyota Corolla S, valued at GHC160,000.00, was ordered to be returned to the complainant.
Incident Details
Prosecutor Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Oppong told the court that the complainant, a Bolt driver residing in Ayi Mensah, Accra, was attacked on January 7, 2025.
The convicts, who lived in Teshie Malik, requested a ride from the complainant to transport them from the Labadi Church of Pentecost headquarters to their residence in Teshie, with plans to continue to Madina.
Upon arrival at their residence, they loaded their belongings into the vehicle while the driver waited.
Ireland then suddenly attacked the driver, stabbing him in the neck with a knife in an attempt to seize the vehicle. The complainant fought back but sustained serious injuries to his neck, hands, arm, and head, causing severe blood loss.
The convicts fled with the vehicle, two mobile phones (an iPhone 13 Pro Max and a Samsung S10), and GHC1,000.00 in cash, leaving the driver unconscious.
A passerby assisted the injured driver, taking him to Teshie Glory Land Clinic. He was later transferred to the University of Ghana Medical Center for further treatment.
The next day, the complainant was discharged and reported the incident to the police.
Investigation and Arrest
Police investigations revealed that the convicts had left most of their belongings, including their passports, at their rented room in Teshie before fleeing to an unknown destination.
On January 9, 2025, the police arrested the pair at Kasoa Odeneho Hotel, where the stolen vehicle was recovered.
In their caution statements, both Ireland and Travis confessed to the crime.
Court’s Considerations
In determining the sentence, the court took into account the ages of the convicts, their first-time offender status, and their claim of being under the influence of drugs, which they said had prompted their move to Ghana for rehabilitation.
The judge advised the convicts to focus on rehabilitation after serving their sentences to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society.
The case underscores the risks faced by ride-hailing drivers and the need for improved personal and public safety measures.
