Drivers operating at the Madina main bus terminal in the La Nkwantanang Municipal Assembly have given authorities a week ultimatum to stop recalcitrant drivers who have turned the streets into lorry station.
They have threatened to stage a demonstration in protest against the bad practice if the government fails to act.
They have likewise challenged the La Nkwantanang Municipal local authorities to enforce the law and compel drivers to operate in the bus terminal instead of operating on the streets to cause traffic.
The government through a Private Partnership Participation (PPP) rehabilitated the facility to provide a permanent lorry park for transport operators and commuters.
This was influenced by the growing population in the municipality, enlarging the level of use of the facility as well as pressure that was put on existing facilities by commuters within Accra to travel to other parts of the country daily.
However, the facility is gradually losing its significance as drivers keep turning the streets into lorry stations and abandoning the main station.
Chairman of the Madina-Adenta Drivers Union Ernest Tham, addressing the media in Accra on Monday, August 8, expressed disappointment in the city authorities.
He is livid that the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has reneged on its duties and allowed drivers to operate illegally on the streets.
He has threatened to allow drivers operating at the bus terminal to also throng the streets to cause more havoc if nothing is done to salvage the situation.
“It is the Assembly which has the authoritative power to ensure drivers operate at the lorry park instead of the streets.
“So, we are relying on the La Nkwantanan Municipal Assembly to enforce the law or we will also allow our members to be on the street,” he cautioned.
Mr Tham expounded that they will only give a seven-day ultimatum to the municipal assembly to act and stop drivers from loading on the street or have them to contend with.
Chairman of the Amot Transport Owners Union at Madina Mohamed Seidu equally insisted that the activities of these drivers on the road are having a toll on their businesses.
He similarly signalled to mobilize drivers to populate the streets if the city authorities continue to allow drivers to operate illegally on the street.
