Mahama 3rd term agenda ‘pushers’ are sycophants – Fiifi Kwetey

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has denounced calls for President John Dramani Mahama to pursue a third term, labeling such suggestions as “blatant sycophancy.”

He asserted that those advocating for a third term bid for Mr Mahama demonstrate a lack of genuine concern for both Ghana and the NDC.

To illustrate his point, the Secretary highlighted the legacy of the party’s late founder, Jerry John Rawlings, noting that Rawlings was never encouraged to seek a third term after completing his two constitutional mandates.

Speaking during the December 31 commemoration of the revolution, the Secretary condemned these proposals as irresponsible and urged that those behind them be held accountable.

“It saddens me to see so much sycophancy creeping into our party. I see a group of people who clearly believe that singing the praises of a leader is their only means of survival. That is why you hear people making statements about a third term; it is nothing but sycophancy and bootlicking of the highest order. Jerry Rawlings, the founder of this party, was never urged by anyone to go for a third term. Yet, today, a bunch of sycophants believe that singing praises will secure them the opportunities they seek.”

He emphasised that party members must appreciate that the NDC was founded on the principle of working for the people rather than individual gain.

Referencing the famous party maxim, “Cadres may come and cadres may go, but the revolution remains,” he argued that the party is a collective entity where individuals serve their part and move on.

He noted that just as the late Jerry Rawlings and President John Evans Atta Mills served to the best of their abilities and passed the torch, President Mahama is currently doing his best and will eventually exit as well.

He stressed that the focus must always remain on the collective good of Ghana and the party, rather than selfish interests.
