Former President John Dramani Mahama has joined the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in urging the government to remove the 15% value-added tax (VAT) on electricity.
In a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, the TUC expressed displeasure with the government’s decision to impose a 15% value-added tax (VAT) on electricity for consumers above lifeline levels.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said the new government’s measure will aggravate the plight of the already-suffering Ghanaians and thus voiced his support for the reversal of the tax.
“Implementing VAT on electricity consumption will increase tariffs by almost 21% and exacerbate the hardship on Ghanaians. This will affect the prices of goods, services, and transport fares.
I agree with organised labour that the government must reverse its decision to start collecting VAT on electricity consumption,” he wrote.
He promised that his government would work assiduously to tackle the economic crisis of the country and alleviate the suffering of the masses if it were voted into power in the 2024 general elections.
