In a powerful address at the 29th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards in Kumasi, President John Mahama emphasized the critical role of the media in promoting peace, security, and national development.

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace, Mahama stressed the importance of responsible journalism, urging media practitioners to verify information before broadcasting to prevent the spread of misinformation and division.

“The media must serve as a ribbon that sustains harmony,” Mahama said, highlighting the media’s role in safeguarding Ghana’s future.

He commended journalists who speak truth to power, strengthening democracy, and encouraged young journalists to remain committed to the principles of journalism.

Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to press freedom, stating, “My administration will uphold press freedom, protect journalists, and ensure truth remains the foundation of our government.”

He also praised the GJA for hosting the awards in Kumasi, marking a significant step towards inclusivity and decentralization.

The event, themed “Safeguarding Ghana’s Future: The Role of the Media in Promoting Peace, Security and the Fight Against Galamsey,” recognized excellence in journalism and honored outstanding media professionals.

Mahama’s speech underscored the importance of a free and responsible media in Ghana’s democratic journey.
