The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as West Africa’s sole candidate for the African Union (AU) Chairpersonship when the regional rotation reaches the continent in 2027.

The decision has been widely praised as a strong demonstration of regional unity and confidence in Mahama’s leadership, diplomatic experience, and commitment to Africa’s development.

According to the ECOWAS communiqué, the endorsement reflects the bloc’s belief that Mahama possesses the vision, competence, and pan-African dedication needed to lead the AU at a time when Africa faces major challenges, including economic recovery, climate change, and political stability.

In response, Mahama expressed gratitude for the support, saying, “The ECOWAS member states have placed their trust in me, and I am honoured. I will work tirelessly to advance Africa’s development, peace, and integration, ensuring that our continent rises to meet its challenges together.”

Analysts have highlighted that the unanimous backing demonstrates solidarity among West African states and positions Mahama strongly ahead of AU deliberations. Such support is expected to enhance his influence in continental discussions and attract broader endorsement from other regional blocs.

Political observers also note that the move boosts Mahama’s stature both at home and across Africa, framing him as a seasoned statesman capable of navigating the continent’s complex diplomatic landscape

Mahama, who previously served as AU Chairperson from 2012 to 2013, is expected to draw on his experience to champion reforms, promote socio-economic growth, and strengthen continental integration. His leadership is seen as critical for advancing initiatives that improve governance, peace, and stability across Africa.

The ECOWAS decision further signals the bloc’s commitment to presenting a united front in continental governance. By working together, West African states aim to strengthen their voice within the AU and influence key decisions that affect the region and the continent as a whole.

Looking toward 2027, all eyes are on how Mahama will consolidate support among other regional blocs and prepare for the high-profile AU leadership role.

The endorsement not only recognizes his past achievements but also sets expectations for visionary leadership that addresses Africa’s most pressing challenges while promoting unity, development, and cooperation across the continent.
