President John Dramani Mahama has nominated His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for appointment as the next Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.
The nomination, made in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution, has been forwarded to the Council of State for consideration, according to a statement issued by the Presidency and signed by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has served on the Bench for decades, rising through the High Court and the Court of Appeal to his current position as a Justice of the Supreme Court. Since April 22, 2025, he has been acting as Chief Justice following the retirement of his predecessor.
The statement praised his “diligence and integrity” throughout his judicial career, highlighting his contributions to the development of Ghanaian jurisprudence. It also commended his reputation among colleagues in the Bench and Bar for “intellect, impartiality, and unwavering commitment to justice.”
If approved, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will formally assume the role of Ghana’s Chief Justice, becoming the head of the Judiciary and presiding over the administration of justice at the nation’s highest court.
