President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministry of Finance to release GH¢1 billion to settle debts owed to state contractors dating back to 2017.

The President specified that these payments must be processed before the Christmas holiday.

The directive was issued on Sunday, December 21, during the sod-cutting ceremony for the Sunyani–Atronie–Acherensua Road Project in the Bono Region.

This project falls under the government’s flagship “Big Push” programme, designed to revive and complete stalled infrastructure projects across the country.

“I have directed the Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson, to release GH¢1 billion to settle debts owed to contractors since 2017 before Christmas. All the contractors will be paid, and the deceased families should follow to receive the money,” he said.

The President noted that comprehensive audits are currently underway to verify outstanding certified works, with a particular focus on projects initiated under the previous administration.

He urged contractors to be proactive in submitting their documentation to avoid further delays.

“I want to urge contractors to hurry up with their certificates to receive your money. Your money will only be delayed if you are lazy.”

President confirmed that dedicated funds have also been allocated for new and ongoing works under the Big Push initiative to ensure steady progress on national infrastructure.
