Mahama planned and plotted third term – NPP MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Oforikrom, Michael Kwesi Aidoo, has refuted President John Dramani Mahama’s claim that he is not a “supreme leader,” asserting that the president’s actions suggest otherwise.

In an exclusive interview with Sir Richie on As it is in Ghana on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM in the UK, Aidoo claimed that President Mahama had initially intended to seek a third term, a claim he described as a “façade.”

According to the MP, the president planned to use his party’s parliamentary majority to push this agenda.

However, he faced significant opposition from both the public and key figures within his own party, including National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who also has presidential aspirations. The criticism reportedly led Mahama to abandon the idea.

Mr Aidoo emphasized that the concerns about a third term were not limited to the opposition. “It is not the Minority that is making the allegations. His own party members were opposed to that,” he stated. He added, “President Mahama gave the assurance that he was not contesting for a third [term]. But we had gathered information that was credible that he was planning to contest for a third term. There is no smoke without fire. It was something he had decided to do.”

Despite the ruling party’s two-thirds majority in Parliament, MP Aidoo declared that the Minority will consistently demand accountability from the government.

“They will have the way, we will have our day. With their numbers, they will do whatever they want, but as the Minority, we will hold them accountable,” he asserted. He further explained his “supreme leader” claim: “I will not describe him as a dictator, but from the current structure, he is a supreme leader. He has denied these assertions, but his actions from January till date make him a supreme leader. They have had their way with every agenda they submitted before Parliament.”

The Aidoo concluded by assuring his constituents of his commitment to advocating for their interests and preventing any potential abuse of power by the government.

He also called on the Ghanaian media to help explain government actions to the public.

“The fact that we voted massively for him doesn’t mean he can do whatever he wants,” he said. “The President must do everything within the confines of the law, remain accountable, and avoid breaching the trust of the people.”
