The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama has vowed to eliminate wasteful projects, including the “One Village, One Dam” initiative, if he is elected.

Mahama plans to redirect funds from these projects into more revenue-generating ventures to bolster the state’s finances.

Mahama emphasized that the country’s current economic crisis necessitates strategic decisions, particularly in reducing government expenditure.

He criticized the current administration for failing to curb spending and focusing solely on increasing revenues.

“If given the political mandate, I would eliminate all those wasteful projects, like One Village, One Dam, which they spend billions on, This way, we can invest in more productive sectors to help the economy grow again,” Mahama stated.

Government’s Stance on Economic Management

In contrast, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who aims to succeed President Akufo-Addo, defended the government’s economic management.

Bawumia claimed that the administration has managed the economy prudently despite facing external challenges and has already reduced expenditures.

Speaking to Muslims during the Eid-ul-Adha prayers on June 16, Bawumia highlighted the significant impact of global events over the past three to five years on the nation’s economy.

He acknowledged that while the country has faced difficulties, data indicates that the economy is on the path to recovery.

“We are not yet back to the economic boom experienced a few years ago, but our economy is recovering,” he stated.
