Former President John Dramani Mahama has outlined a policy to formalize and regulate Ghana’s small-scale mining sector.
During the launch of the NDC Youth Manifesto, his campaign spokesperson for mining, Raymond Nana Ebbah, announced plans for a dedicated board committee to oversee licensing and regulation of small-scale mining operations.
According to him, this committee will be tasked with ensuring adherence to environmental and safety standards while facilitating access to financial resources and security measures for miners.
Mahama’s proposal acknowledges the significant economic contribution of small-scale mining to the Ghanaian economy while addressing the challenges of illegality and environmental degradation associated with the sector.
By providing a formal regulatory framework and supporting infrastructure, the former president aims to transform small-scale mining into a sustainable and beneficial economic activity.
The NDC youth wing has expressed enthusiasm for the policy, highlighting its potential to create jobs and improve the livelihoods of young Ghanaians involved in the sector.
