President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to build a country that works for every Ghanaian, urging unity and shared responsibility in a Christmas message to the nation.
In a brief statement issued on December 24, 2024, Mr Mahama described Christmas as “a season of hope and renewed inspiration,” anchoring his message on faith, national service, and inclusive governance.
He thanked Ghanaians for the mandate to serve as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, saying the confidence placed in him carried a deep obligation to govern in the national interest.
“As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and the values He lived in his own life, I wish to thank you, the good people of Ghana, for bestowing on me the opportunity to serve you,” the President said.
He added that his administration would pursue a “prosperous and democratic state anchored in the principles of freedom, justice, accountability, and equal opportunities for all.”
Mr Mahama formally took office on January 7, 2025, following his victory in the 2024 general election and a peaceful transfer of power.
Since assuming office, the presidency has highlighted early gains including a calmer political climate, renewed engagement with social partners, and initial steps to restore confidence in public governance through consultations on economic recovery and institutional reforms.
According to the President, the values associated with Christmas should guide public life beyond the festive season.
“Christmas is a season of hope and renewed inspiration,” he said, noting that national progress would depend on collective effort rather than government action alone. “I am determined to build a nation that works for all,” he stressed, linking that goal to transparent leadership and equal opportunity.
President Mahama’s administration has been widely credited for stabilising the economy and introducing key reforms and social intervention programs, including No Fees Stress, Free Tertiary Education for Persons With Disabilities, Abolishing of the betting tax and e-levy, just to name a few.
While longer-term outcomes will be measured over time, the presidency maintains that the early emphasis on inclusion and fairness reflects the spirit outlined in the Christmas message.
Mr Mahama also extended goodwill to families across the country, calling on citizens to support one another during the festive period.
“Merry Christmas,” he said, signing off the message with a note of optimism about Ghana’s future.
Presidents typically use Christmas messages to reflect on their governments’ performance while painting a positive future for the future.
