President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening the Ghana Immigration Service following a high-level meeting with its Governing Council at the Jubilee House.

The engagement, led by the Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak and Member of Parliament for Asawase constituency provided an opportunity for Council members to formally introduce themselves to the President, brief him on ongoing governance reforms, and seek guidance on enhancing the Service’s operations.

President Mahama underscored the strategic importance of the Immigration Service, describing it as “the first point of entry into Ghana” and a key symbol of national sovereignty. He assured the Council of government’s full support in efforts to retool and modernise the institution to effectively safeguard national security.

The President also commended the Council for initiating Project SECOBOR (Secure Our Borders), a programme aimed at strengthening border security through public-private partnerships, particularly in the face of limited state resources.

During the meeting, the Interior Ministry outlined ongoing reforms under government policy, including plans to construct seven new regional immigration offices across the country. The initiative is expected to decentralise services, improve operational efficiency, and enhance border management.

Chairman of the Council, Rev. Stephen Wengam, appealed for presidential backing for Project SECOBOR, noting that the initiative has the potential to significantly boost the operational capacity of the Service.

The Interior Ministry reiterated its commitment to providing policy direction, mobilising resources, and strengthening institutional frameworks to support the Immigration Service in delivering on its mandate.

President Mahama congratulated the Ministry and the Council for their efforts and pledged continued support to ensure the Service effectively carries out its critical national responsibilities.
